iPhone 18 Pro Rumors: Variable Aperture Lens
According to the latest reports, Apple plans to equip next year's iPhone 18 Pro models with a variable aperture lens.
Both iPhone 18 Pro models' rear main camera (which Apple calls the 48-megapixel fused camera) will support variable aperture, a first for the iPhone.
The leaker also claims that the main and telephoto lenses on these two Pro models will feature a larger aperture. The variable aperture system can physically adjust the lens opening to allow more light in for low-light shots, or narrow the opening to prevent overexposure in photos. It can also make both the foreground and background sharper.
Simply put, it is a device used to adjust the amount of light entering the camera based on ambient light and to control the range of sharpness in the image (depth of field).
The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to launch in September 2026.
